Signs - a Movie Review

On Sunday evening I saw Shymalan´s Signs starring Mel Gibson on German TV. I had missed the movie in the cinemas and had indeed not read any reviews before, so I was totally unbiased.
As for the director: I love “6th Sense”, liked “Unbreakable”, and have not seen “The Village” yet.
Signs keeps you interested and thrilled, no doubt. I did not even quite know what genre the film belongs to, and for quite a time into the film I thought that the whole alien theme would be shown to be only a hoax. So I was very suprised to see that yes, there really were UFOs all over the skies; so a science-fiction-movie, after all.
Why not? I love Sci-Fi!
But this one was different - the aliens were only the background to what really interested the movie makers: the story is about quite an ordinary and plain midwestern(?) American family of today - and where Independence Day was great drama this is a detailed and meticulous study of “the little man”.
Even more this is a movie about a man who lost his faith by a serious blow of destiny (?) and has to face another dramatic turn in his life. Very good acting by Mel Gibson, but we all know already that he is one of the great.
Some humour, some appealing to human hearts, some suspense and horror, really, a bit of science fiction - and a spectacular twist at the end. At least the “end twist” could have been spectacular, if only I had really understood it completely. My problem is, I did not.
Yes, I have some idea of what the movie wants to tell us at the end, but I seem to have missed THE clue, THE very moment of the twist (or were there two????).
I am unhappy that I seem to be one of few who did NOT quite understand the end.
So if YOU did, please let me know, will you (the movie was released in 2002, so we will not be accused of spoiling, I hope).

Hi Marchal, I haven’t seen the movie before sunday, too. I think it was a good film. Not as frightening as “The 6th Sense”, but a little bit more SciFi, less Thriller. About the ending I really feel don’t that much confusion. Maybe I didn’t dig that deep into. I actually haven’t seen any misunderstanding. But maybe I haven’t watched the movie from another point of view.

Many preeastergreetings. Cheers, woody
