Someone does read this blog! ====:—)

This morning I received an email by Matt Compton , who read my entry on Sierra-Online computer games and pointed me to an interesting King´sQuest -website:
“Had you heard about the King’s Quest fan game that had been in the
works since 2002? Over 40 people have worked on it. Programmers,
writers, artists, animators, actors — all because they loved King’s
Quest. When finished, the game was going to be made available to
anyone who wanted it, for free, via the web.
It was due to be released this December, but just a few weeks ago,
Vivendi Universal Games (who now owns Sierra, and thus the rights to
King’s Quest) issued a cease & desist letter to the fans making the
game. They were forced to shut down.
Some King’s Quest fans, myself included, have joined forces in an
effort to save the game. We’ve just recently launched a website.
http://www.savekqix.org
We’re asking everyone to send an email to Vivendi, and we’ve made it
very easy to do so via our website. There’s an email link there –
you click it, and up pops a new email all ready to go. All you have
to do is hit send. It literally only takes 10 seconds.”
I had read about this shutdown of the serious fanmade King´s Quest IX project before on Wikipedia and Blackwood.dk and thought it a pity. True, software firms like Vivendi have to protect their investments (and I heard some rumour that there is a reissue of a compilation of the old King´s Quest games intended), you do have to “see both sides of the story here” as PC4Media suggests , but perhaps an agreement with those who have developed “King´s Quest IX” could be found? Kotaku comments that “from a business perspective, they are asking an awful lot of Vivendi to release their game or the rights, but it’s probably worth a shot. Won’t this just get released over the Internet sooner or later (if it hasn’t already leaked), anyway?” As Monkeygames comments this is clearly a problem “on the political side of gaming” and “the issue of “dead software” being resurrected by fans” has not yet been quite “weighed in”.
The SaveKQIX website is very well done and really informative, telling about the History of KQ, offering a forum for fans and the most important King´ s Quest weblinks , as well as a page offering several ways for the interested to help and try and “save KQIX” (emailing to Vivendi, spreading the word about the website - like I am doing at the moment, linking to the website or writing paper letters to Vivendi Universal Games).
If you ever liked the good old PC adventures and can spare a minute please go and give SaveKQIX a visit!
Thank you Matt for pointing this out!
