Posted in regular, Stories and Poetry (by myself), Amateur Haiku on Mon, 7 Nov 2005 07:28:24 +0100 by Marchal

Just done for B1-66er´s poem challenge :

Carribean Pals,
jolly parrots on shoulders.
Plood :-) drops from their hands.

Poor Poem, I know, but it is still very early…

Strange dream - hold hands and all will be good…

Posted in regular, Dreams on Sat, 5 Nov 2005 13:55:13 +0100 by Marchal

I had a strange dream this night:

I went to a big building, looking a bit like a fortress, or a compound of several buildings. I knew that my former girl friend works there now and indeed on entering I saw her in a roof garden tending some plants.
The girl friend thing lost its importance, though, when it became known that “we” were being attacked by “the freaks”, something very dreadful and dangerous. And I heard that they were going to attack the Northern Tower. I wanted to help and persuaded people to come to the Northern Tower with me. When we had climbed the stairs to the very high tower, at first there was noone to be seen, no freaks anywhere. But suddenly we realized that we ourselves were changing - I remember one guy who suddenly grew brightly green claws and wings: so it was US who were (going to be) the freaks after all.
On a sudden impulse I made (or just joined in, I don´t remember) people hold hands and we sang rhymes like “we hold hands and noone will be harmed” - and indeed we turned back into normal people. Some newcomers started to become freaks but as soon as we took their hands their was no danger any longer.

There were a lot of more details to the dream that I have already forgotten. But I woke up with the feeling that it was an important dream and I felt good about it.

I am usually a “canned dreams dreamer” meaning that I usually just redream dreams that have accompanied me for long periods of time and in my sleep I recognize them as such (just like when on watching “Casablanca” you know already in advance what Rick will do and say and realize that you know it already). But this was a new dream, a genuine one, as well, as I do not remember any events yesterday that might have influenced it, no TV programs or the like.

Easy to interpret, isn´t it: “we hold hands and noone wil be harmed” - but such naive ideas in a hard and cynical being like me????? Strange …

    Save KQIX!

Posted in regular on Sat, 5 Nov 2005 08:53:41 +0100 by Marchal

Someone does read this blog! ====:—)

    a King´s Quest screenshot

This morning I received an email by Matt Compton , who read my entry on Sierra-Online computer games and pointed me to an interesting King´sQuest -website:

“Had you heard about the King’s Quest fan game that had been in the works since 2002? Over 40 people have worked on it. Programmers, writers, artists, animators, actors — all because they loved King’s Quest. When finished, the game was going to be made available to anyone who wanted it, for free, via the web.

It was due to be released this December, but just a few weeks ago, Vivendi Universal Games (who now owns Sierra, and thus the rights to King’s Quest) issued a cease & desist letter to the fans making the game. They were forced to shut down.

Some King’s Quest fans, myself included, have joined forces in an effort to save the game. We’ve just recently launched a website.

    http://www.savekqix.org

We’re asking everyone to send an email to Vivendi, and we’ve made it very easy to do so via our website. There’s an email link there – you click it, and up pops a new email all ready to go. All you have to do is hit send. It literally only takes 10 seconds.”

I had read about this shutdown of the serious fanmade King´s Quest IX project before on Wikipedia and Blackwood.dk and thought it a pity. True, software firms like Vivendi have to protect their investments (and I heard some rumour that there is a reissue of a compilation of the old King´s Quest games intended), you do have to “see both sides of the story here” as PC4Media suggests , but perhaps an agreement with those who have developed “King´s Quest IX” could be found? Kotaku comments that “from a business perspective, they are asking an awful lot of Vivendi to release their game or the rights, but it’s probably worth a shot. Won’t this just get released over the Internet sooner or later (if it hasn’t already leaked), anyway?” As Monkeygames comments this is clearly a problem “on the political side of gaming” and “the issue of “dead software” being resurrected by fans” has not yet been quite “weighed in”.

The SaveKQIX website is very well done and really informative, telling about the History of KQ, offering a forum for fans and the most important King´ s Quest weblinks , as well as a page offering several ways for the interested to help and try and “save KQIX” (emailing to Vivendi, spreading the word about the website - like I am doing at the moment, linking to the website or writing paper letters to Vivendi Universal Games).

If you ever liked the good old PC adventures and can spare a minute please go and give SaveKQIX a visit!

Thank you Matt for pointing this out!
